Muzycy zespołu założonego w 1980 r. studiowali na Wiedeńskim Uniwersytecie Muzyki u Hatto Beyerle oraz Alfreda Starra, a także na Uniwersytecie Cincinatti z LaSalle Quartet. W latach 1983–1985 kwartet był laureatem nagród na konkursach w Cambridge w Anglii, w Évian we Francji oraz w Yellow Springs w Stanach Zjednoczonych.

W kolejnych latach rozpoczęła się międzynarodowa kariera kwartetu, który występował w najważniejszych salach koncertowych i centrach muzycznych w Nowym Jorku, Waszyngtonie, Tokio, Berlinie, Amsterdamie, Paryżu, Rzymie, Buenos Aires i Wiedniu. W rodzinnym mieście muzyków, Wiedniu, cykl koncertów Artis Quartet granych w Wiener Musikverein jest od 1988 r. dorocznym wydarzeniem.

Zespół współpracował z takimi artystami, jak Mischa Maisky, Sol Gabetta, Peter Frankl, Christoph Eschenbach, Phillipe Entremont, Till Fellner, Thomas Zehetmair, Stefan Vladar, Sharon Kam, Michel Lethiec, Juliane Banse, Jeremy Menuhin, Richard Stoltzman oraz z muzykami Alban Berg Quartett.

Artis Quartet nagrał ponad 30 płyt dla wytwórni Nimbus Records, Sony Classical, CBS/Sony, Orfeo, Accord, Koch/Schwann, CAMERATA Tokio; jest laureatem takich międzynarodowych nagród, jak Echo Klassik, Indie Award (Stany Zjednoczone), Grand Prix du Disque/Académie Charles Cros, Prix Caecilia, Diapason d’Or, Wiener Flötenuhr, MIDEM Classical Award.

W 2008 r. powstał film dokumentalny o muzykach zespołu i ich pracy nad muzyką Józefa Haydna; film wyprodukowały kanały telewizyjne BR Alpha, 3 SAT oraz ORF.

Poczynając od 2010 r., Artis Quartet jest drugim obok Tokyo Quartett kwartetem związanym z Norfolk Festival i Szkołą Letnią na Uniwersytecie Yale (USA).

Peter Schuhmayer gra na skrzypcach Johanna Rombacha (2001). Instrumenty, na których grają Johannes Meissl (skrzypce A. Guarneriego z 1690 r.), Herbert Kefer (altówka J. B. Guadagniniego z 1784 r.) oraz Othmar Müller (wiolonczela A. Amatiego z 1573 r.) pochodzą z kolekcji Austriackiego Banku Narodowego.

Founded in 1980, the Artis Quartet studied at the University of Music in Vienna with Hatto Beyerle and Alfred Starr and at the University of Cincinnati with the LaSalle Quartet. In the years 1983–1985 the quartet were prizewinners at competitions in Cambridge, England, Évian, France and Yellow Springs, USA.

Subsequently, the quartet began its international career performing at the most important venues and centres of music in New York, Washington, Tokyo, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Buenos Aires and Vienna. In Vienna, where the members of the Artis Quartet live, their cycle of concerts at the Wiener Musikverein has been an annual event since 1988.

They have enjoyed collaboration with artists like Mischa Maisky, Sol Gabetta, Peter Frankl, Christoph Eschenbach, Phillipe Entremont, Till Fellner, Thomas Zehetmair, Stefan Vladar, Sharon Kam, Michel Lethiec, Juliane Banse, Jeremy Menuhin, Richard Stoltzman and members of the Alban Berg Quartett.

The Artis Quartet has recorded more than 30 CDs for Nimbus Records, Sony Classical, CBS/Sony, Orfeo, Accord, Koch/Schwann and CAMERATA Tokyo, and won such international awards as the Echo Klassik, Indie Award (USA), Grand Prix du Disque/Académie Charles Cros, the Prix Caecilia, the Diapason d’Or, the Wiener Flötenuhr, and the MIDEM Classical Award.

In 2008 a documentary film about the AQ and their work on Joseph Haydn was produced by the television channels BR Alpha, 3 SAT and ORF.

Since 2010, alongside the Tokyo Quartet, the AQ has been a “quartet in residence” at the Norfolk Festival/Summer School of Yale University (USA).

Peter Schuhmayer plays a violin by Johann Rombach (2001). Johannes Meissl’s A. Guarneri (1690) violin, Herbert Kefer’s J. B. Guadagnini (1784) viola and Othmar Müller’s A. Amati, (1573) cello are instruments from the Austrian National Bank’s collection.
